Tips for surviving the night:
1. Use the knife until about 50 percent completion. May seem difficult, but entirely possible if you're patient, and will help to significantly increase your stock of ammunition.
2. Don't pick up any weapon other than the TMP. (The first gun that drops.) This will mean that nothing but 9mm rounds drop from enemies when they are killed. (Or health packs if you're low on health.) I know that the grenade launcher and .45 are enticing, but they're not worth it. While the .45 has nice damage, its usefulness is negated by a high reload time and low rate of fire. The grenade launcher is only really useful against groups of slow, bunched together enemies, which means it's useless beyond about 50% completion, and completely ineffective against the boss beasts. Most enemies come at you too fast for the nader to be useful, because if you fire too close to yourself (which you'll have to to hit them,) then you'll do damage to yourself. The shotgun may be a reasonable pickup, but I haven't really toyed with it. I'd say, stick to the TMP.
3. It might be useful to build a cache of health pickups in one corner of the map. Do this during the earlier stages (pre 50%) by going into a fairly secluded area of the map, taking minimal damage, then stabbing a bunch of enemies to death until there are four or five health pickups laying around.
4. Make every shot count. Instead of just going Rambo and spraying the machine gun in every direction, find out how many bullets it takes to down each enemy, and only use that many bullets. Ammo is a precious commodity.
5. While reading the story line, be amazed that the person who made this game isn't some stupid, chat speaking Spaniard, and can actually spell! Holy crap!
That is all.
